Project Overview

Pressure and gas availability from the Irish Sea well is decreasing.

As such, Connah’s Quay Power Station had a need to measure the remaining gas resource more accurately including volumetric flow and be able to analyse content of the gas.

Challenge

This project came with a number of very specific objectives:

  • Improved repeatability of Feed Gas measurement
  • Accurate measurement of Sales Gas to the grid
  • Analytical measurement of gas to comply with grid specification
  • Maintain integrity of high pressure process while maintaining accurate measurement

Solution

DPS Group were tasked with installing a system to measure the gas coming from the Irish Sea well and onwards to the power station.

Connah’s Quay Power Station (main site) is a 1420MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) station with four generating units, complete with a Gas Treatment Plant (Site) and Above Ground Installation. Currently the GTP has two separate metering systems.

We installed systems to measure Feed gas and Sales gas. Both of these systems are monitored 24/7 and are connected to a standalone metering computer. They have the capability to integrate into the existing main site DCS system.

In Detail

The following technical solutions applied to this project: 

  • Installation of fiscal metering system within Zone 2 area
  • Installation of two off 10” calibrated Turbine Meters
  • Installation of 10” dual head Gas Ultrasonic Flow Meter
  • Mechanical alterations to 14” high pressure gas pipework
  • Installation of 3 off Gas Chromatographs
  • Compex electricians to install and test system
