Project Overview

The North British Distillery Company Limited undertook a major sustainability project to install a state of the art Anaerobic Digestion & Water Treatment plant. The project was split into three phases:

Phase1 comprised development of a process to mix process condensate and distillery spent wash to provide a conditioned feed in terms of pH and temperature suitable for treatment in a new Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Plant.

Phase 2 was to expand the AD process and to install a water treatment plant to clean the AD effluent allowing approximately 40% of the water to be recycled with the remainder being discharged to the local sewer.

Phase 3 was to install a gas engine to produce electricity from the biogas produced by the AD reactors

Challenge

  • Improved effluent quality
  • Lower effluent charges
  • Biogas used for electricity & steam generation
  • Reduction in water usage
  • Reduction in energy costs
  • Remove load from plant

Solution

  • DPS provided full design of the Electrical, Control system
  • Supply and install all instrumentation.
  • Upgrade intelligent motor control systems
  • Installation of control system
  • Full electrical services installation
  • Commissioning and handover of the system
  • Ongoing system support contract
